ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak said on Saturday the provincial government had not stopped the accountability commission from arresting anyone.
Addressing a news conference in the federal capital, Khattak said the amendment to the accountability law was meant to ensure that accountability officials inform the assembly after someone is arrested.
He said the provincial government established the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission for fair and transparent accountability of the corrupt, and no other province had taken such a step.
The legislation was made to end differences between the director general of the commission and its members, he said.
Khattak said the legislation was not aimed at making the accountability officials inform the government before they arrest any important person. Rather, he said, the commission was asked to inform the provincial assembly after the accountability officials arrest someone.
According to the original law, the commission could get remand of any accused for 35 days. After amendment, the remand period has been reduced to 15 days. Moreover, it is binding upon the commission to arrest anyone after investigation, he said.
The chief minister said the legislation made it compulsory for the commission to initiate corruption cases against people on the basis of solid evidence, not on the basis of an anonymous application.
Expressing reservations about recruitments to the commission, the chief minister said that he would scrutinise the recruitments.
